Depending on the type of lesions there are numerous solutions available to remove acne scars ranging from intervention, recovery time and effectiveness. By the end of this article you will have an understand of the diversity of options you may have and along side your dermatologist to determine what procedure will work best for you.

Lets first take a look at Medical Roll CIT (Collagen induction treatment) it’s a relatively new acne scar treatment that has been showing very promising results. It works by creating many small puncture wounds in the topical layer of the skin, similar to how a tattoo gun transfers the ink on the skin. A roller with hundreds of small needles at the end, what this does is allow additional topical medication like vitamin A to be absorbed almost directly to the lower level of the skin while also promoting collagen production which is responsible of the tightening and many other attributes. Local anesthesia is required and total time for the procedure takes up to 20 min.

Subcision requires a surgical intervention to detach the sub layer of the skin from the affected scar area, making it possible to release the tension and create even surface area around it, several treatments are usually required. Excision requires the extraction of the scar with the use of a specialized tool for this procedure the skin is then sutured together to allow the healing process to begin. One more alternative is the replacement method which occurs when skin needs to be removed from another part of the body to apply it in the affected area.

Fat can be removed from other parts of the body and transferred underneath the acne scar bringing it up to the surface and creating an even space. This procedure is referred to as microlipoinjection it’s most common utilized when working towards clearing ice pick scars.
When the top layer of the skin is surgically removed from the affected area, it allows a new layer to heal and to be formed, this is referred to as dermabrasion. it is known to be effective on the removal of superficial acne and depressed scars.

The skin can be treated by an array of chemicals with the intention to remove the top skin layer. Chemical peels can take several sessions and runs the risk of infection, a redness and burning sensation is common for days after the treatment. Your dermatologist may start with smaller concentration of the chemicals and work up to 70% of the intensity over a period of time to achieve results. Glycolic acid peels are an example of this type of treatment.

When they’re deep scars as commonly seen in the ice pick scar classification, there needs to be a way to push the skin up and even the surface area of the skin, dermafiller agents provide the ability to do so. This is executed by injecting an agent underneath the affected area to push it up and even the skin. This procedure require scheduled appointments and to be redone on a regular basis.

Latest advances in the laser dermatology technology has opened a new world on how dermatological surgery is done.
Currently there are commonly two types of laser treatments: Carbon Dioxide laser and Non-Ablative laser.
Carbon Dioxide Laser work by inducing heat to the affected area and burning the part of the skin while leaving the remaining area intact, this will create new skin to regenerate and even the texture and tonality.
Non Ablative unlike its predecessor is not based on burning the affected area rather it focus on stimulating collagen, and creates tension in the tissue. This procedure does not work well for all types of scars.

Two common Scar typs:

Choosing a good dermatologist is like choosing a good mechanic, it can be a challenging task. You should chose a dermatologist that you know has your best interest in mind, someone who understands the physical as well as the physiological effects of acne. Your relationship is built on trust by covering each treatment in detail as well as their possible side effects and typical results you could expect. Someone who takes the time to understand your family history, and understand you.

The first place to start looking is by asking your primary care physician for recommendations based on the results of their existing patients.

Call the people you have in your personal address book of friends and family and ask if they know someone who could recommend a good dermatologist, or ask them if they know someone who had acne and now it is all gone. Chances are they came across a good doctor.
Once you have some leads consider goggling their names to find reviews, read their credentials, you can bet that a good dermatologist has tons of customer testimonials.

Check their office space does it look like business as usual? Or does it look like they’ve made it personable, do they have successful before and after pictures of his patients or thank you letters placed any where around his office, or do they just have posters of medications. pharmaceutical companies pay them a large amount of money to recommend their products, so a lot of them have their own personal agenda as a top priority. Why would they recommend a simple effect treatment if a higher ticketed item will yield them a higher return.
How many years have they been in practice? and a good question to ask is why they choose the dermatology field in the first place.
In case of an emergency due to a reaction of a treatment how can you reach them during after hours emergency?

While a dermatologist is a considerably important resource and guide a quick look into alternative medicine and eastern medical practices such as chinese medicine acne treatment many of their practices have been developed and improved for many years. So it can also be another source in the battle against acne.

I have been conducting continuous research about acne, from causes, treatments, and scar treatments since the age of 17, I am now 29. Unlike most people my acne did not stop after puberty in fact it got much worst. I tried so many different type of home regimens, one of the most popular is a high concentration of benzol peroxide combined with extensive moisturizer combination. This routine always left my skin red, irritated and produced different tone spots. I also went through different type of oral antibiotics such as Tetracycline, Minocycline, Doxycycline and topical antibiotics. Being raised in Colombia home remedies are part of the culture I tried different flower elixirs and even visited a “Brujo” a witch doctor who claimed could cure people with his touch. Needless to say it seemed that all efforts where in vain.
Being a dancer and performer having bad skin was not only affecting me physiologically but also professionally. I didn’t even have the confidence to talk to women because I figure they would turn me down because of my bad skin.
I continued to experiment with different combination of treatments to find one that worked. I didn’t have the $6,000 to invest in a laser treatment at the time so I continued to struggle with it.
One day I had to submit my self to the emergency room due to a bad case of strep throat, the doctor who attended me took a quick look at my skin and said she had won the fight against acne herself. She prescribed to me Clindamycin 1% topical gel, after the skin cleared she recommended glycolic acid peels and afterwards a routine that had proven to be effective for her.
You might have read by now that one of the causes of acne is the result of plugged pores , dead skins cells and oil which creates the growth of bacteria. Clindamycin works by depleting bacteria the protein that it needs to survive causing in a sense to starve to death.

After your skin clearers it is necessary to allow a 3 months for the skin to adjust and continue the healing process of the post acne red marks. These are not scars they are post inflammatory hyperpigmentation they are signs of the tissue continuing to heal it self . Once that is diminished depending on the severity of the scars a glycolic acid treatment is necessary either by your dermatologist or by using over the counter products.
The third step is consistent care of your skin.
The regimen that has worked extremely well for me is to clean my face twice a day with a non alchol based cleanser with 1% Salicylic acid, and exfoliate micro-beads, I follow that with a glycolic acid toner and finalize with a moisturizer.
I also apply an over the counter glycolic acid mask peel every two weeks.
And the most importantly is consistency. I always have Clindamycin stocked and readily at hand. It conservers itself really well, if I notice that acne might start in the prone areas, I apply it immediately and by next day it is all gone. It has been a miracle cure for me something that the Colombian “Brujo” could not do.
Mind you that everyone’s acne is different and may respond to different treatments and medications this is what happened to cure my acne and continues to keep my skin clear.
